The development of the villa system in most areas of Roman Catalonia means the diffusion of a pattern of settlements that is characterized by a very diverse typology. These settlements have speci c roles and are distributed following a hierarchy that re ects their differences. This hierarchy also re ects the production mode and the organization of each estate and is the result of the social and economic strategies developed between the end of the Republic and the beginning of the Empire.
